Die Prinzessinnengärten (The Princess Garden), the urban garden paradise

prinzessinnengaerten-375x375The Prinzessinnengärten in Kreuzberg, between Prinzenstraße, Oranienstraße and Prinzessinnenstraße, is the ultimate Urban Gardening showcase of Germany.

Here, in 2009, a non-profit organisation called , Nomadisch Grün (Nomadic Green) – created a mobile garden paradise on a formerly neglected area the size of a football field.

In this case ‘mobile’ means that all elements, like for example the gardening tools, the organic kitchen and the toilets are housed in mobile containers that can be moved from one place to another at any time.

Also the planting beds are placed in transportable wooden or plastic crates. The tomato plants and potatoes grow in old rice, or potato, sacks. Only organic vegetables are planted. The idea behind this is that it should be made possible to set up an ecological garden project on concreated areas or on soil that under other circumstances would not be suitable for gardening.

As the space is only leased from the city, re the situation may need to change on short notice. Therefore, the possibility for a quick and uncomplicated relocation must always be ensured.

Entrance to the garden is free. Revenue is generated through the garden’s own little restaurant, where you will find mainly vegetarian and vegan dishes with fresh vegetables from the garden, and also the sale of the vegetables grown.

With the exception of very bad weather, the garden is open every day from around 10 o’clock. The garden café opens at 11 and the kitchen offers lunch from around noon (at weekends from 13 onwards).
