The triumphal arch is one of the most important sights in Barcelona and you will encounter lots of tourists there. Locals also come to this place for skating or strolling, especially on the weekends. The triumphal arch was built as the main entrance to the 1880 Barcelona World Fair, which is why the front frieze contains the inscription “Barcelona welcomes the nations”. The friezes on the sides of the arch contain allegories of Agriculture, Industry, Trade and Art. At many occasions the arch serves as a finish line at popular races and other sports events.

This is one of the best known parking lots in Barcelona. It has an area of 17,42 hecares. The seat of the Catalan parliament, the Barcelona zoo and the Castle of the Three Dragons (the seat of the zoological museum) are located here. Other places of interest, such as the Barcelona-França station, the triumphal arch and the Olympic village are also in the neighbourhood. The park was built in the old city fortress and was therefore named “Citadel”. One of the best known places in the park is the fountain Font de la Cascada, also know as “Big Waterfall” or “Monumental Waterfall”. Another popular place is the lake with islets, exotic plants and water animals, where you can sail in a dinghy. The park is among the protected heritage sites in Catalonia.

Being one of the first coastal districts of Barcelona, the Olympic village has a marina and many bars and restaurants. The Olympic Games of 1992 gave a big boost to the city and this area was developed as residential area for the athlets of the Olympics. The famous Mapfre tower and its twin tower, the famous Arts hotel (both are 154 metres high and can be seen from many different parts of the city) are an important symbol of Barcelona and the coast in particular. The golden sculpture “Peix”(“fish”) from Frank O. Gehry can also be admired in the neighbourhood. Although the Arts hotel and “Peix” sculpture are located at the coast, they belong to the Barceloneta district. The Olympic village, and especially the Olympic marina, is a popular nightlife location for foreign tourists, among others.
