The route begins in the newly created area north of the Oberbaum bridge, between the train
station and Warschauer Straße and Ehrenbergstraße which is known as Oberbaum city. When you set
off, look out for the striking Narva Tower. Created in 1909, this local landmark was the first
skyscraper in the city, and has been increased from the original 10 floors to 16. Since 2005, the
building has been the home of BASF.
Before you liess the well-known Oberbaum bridge, which connects the districts of Kreuzberg and
Friedrichshain, and once separated East from West Berlin. Today, the bridge is regarded as an
important symbol of their unity. The East Side Gallery is located along the side of the Spree in
Friedrichshain. It was designed by 118 artists and is 1.3 km long, making it the longest open air
gallery in the world. The most famous picture painted on the Berlin wall is the brother Kiss by
Dimitri Vrube.

Arriving in the picturesque Nikolai quarter you will have the feeling you enter an open-air
museum. Highlight of the oldest residential area of the city is the Nikolaikirche, Berlin’s
oldest preserved building, which today is a Museum of sacred sculptures. But also the house of
Lessing’s or the Knoblauchhaus are equally worth a visit. The latter includes a museum that
portraits the Biedermeier period and especially the influential family Knoblauch. The District has

The route continues over the Mühlendamm bridge from where you can catch a glimpse of the Berliner
Dom. Past the Palace Square, you eventually come to the info centre of the reconstruction of the
Berlin Palace. The castle was the central building in the historic centre of Berlin. In the course of
history, the Castle used to be the Royal (or Imperial) residence before it burned down during the
Second World War and was replaced in 1973 by the Palace of the Republic. Since 2013, the city has been
planning a new building of the city Palace based on a reconstructed facade and other parts of the
building. The opening of the Humboldt Centre is planned in 2019.
Der Gendarmenmarkt
Gendarmenmarkt, 10117 Berlin, Deutschland
Three monumental buildings define the view of the Gendarmenmarkt, one of the city’s most
beautiful squares. The German Cathedral, which after 200 years, passed in 1984 from the Protestant
Church to the State, is a place for a variety of exhibitions since reunification in 1990. Opposite
is the French Cathedral. The dome tower consists of the French Church of Frederick and the
Huguenot Museum. Together, both buildings border the classical concert hall, which is used more as
a theatre. Rebuilt several times, the building was already used and known as the comedy theatre
and state theatre. In addition to its long and varied history, the concert hall, with its
attractive program, still attracts many visitors to this day.
Checkpoint Charlie
Friedrichstraße 43-45, 10117 Berlin, Deutschland
Checkpoint Charlie,
Formerly the most famous border crossing in Berlin, holds many tourists in its spell. The border
crossing gained notoriety in October 1961, when Allied and Soviet tanks with live ammunition faced
each other ready to fight. Also, some spectacular escapes have been documented at this historical
point of which you can learn more in the West Gallery wall of the Friedrichstrasse. The Eastern
wall of the Gallery informs visitors about the significance of the symbol of Checkpoint Charlie,
as well as its importance as a site of international confrontation. Moreover, visitors can visit
the museum and information centre on the subject to get further details about the events.
Der Potsdamer Platz

exciting and vibrant mix of entertainment, history and economy. The Sony Centre is one of the most
famous buildings in the square, and offers space for entertainment, work and living. In addition,
buildings such as the railway Tower, the Daimler Chrysler Quartier and the Beisheim Center also
impress. An undisputed highlight is Europe’s fastest elevator to the panorama platform on
the 24th floor of the Kollhoff-Tower building.
