The Incandescent Light of Luz

Nestled in a curvaceous crook of Portugal’s renowned Algarve coast, the former fishing village of Luz is a delightful destination in which to spend a sunny sojourn. The famous and foreboding Rocha Negra reigns supreme over the golden sands of Luz; this compelling cliff is an ancient product of a volcano’s molten lava flow, the boiling liquid of which cooled to create this spectacular 150 million year old sculpture.

On the other side of the bay, a flagrant fortress gazes solemnly out to sea; dating back to the 14th century, Luz Castle is a dominating structure used to project the vulnerable bay from pirate attacks. Now, the historic monument has a more recreations purpose, and houses refined restaurants from which panoramic ocean vistas can be enjoyed.
