Original Unverpackt in Berlin
Original Unverpackt – Concious shopping in the German Capital
After each and every purchase (even in organic
supermarkets) we collect a massive mountain of packaging waste. Even if you pay attention and try to
prevent it, unfortunately it cannot be avoided for some products, as they are not available otherwise.
In Germany alone around 16 Million tons of packaging material end up in the waste, and according to
the German environment department there are almost 140 Million Tons of waste swimming in the seas and
laying at the beaches. That did not leave Milena Glimbovski and Sara Wolf, the two founders of
Original Unverpackt, untouched. And so the idea was born, to open a supermarket that makes it possible
to buy unpackaged goods, the so called ‘Bulk Shopping’.
‘Bulk Shopping’ means, that the customers take their own containers from home, and fill these up with
exact amount of product that is needed, with the self-service ‘Bulk Bins’.
In 2014, the first store was opened in the Wiener Straße in Kreuzberg, where you can shop for
everything you need without disposable packaging: Food, Snacks, Spirits, Cosmetics, Detergents, Books,
containers for the transport home and storage in your kitchen. The store is not massive, but has a
constantly growing assortment currently consisting of around 400 products and OU currently employs
around 12 Employees.
Both concept, design and assortment are outstanding. It makes you want to have an Original Unverpackt eco-friendly shopping possibility at your doorstep – thanks to the OU-franchise option this dream might be coming true!
