Named Americas “best-mannered city” by etiquette expert Marjabelle Young Stewart in 1995, Charleston is a friendly place to visit. Many of Charlestons tourist attractions are historical, such as the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon, built in the 1770s. Also Fort Sumter, the island fortress near the opening of Charleston Harbor. In 1864, nine Confederate soldiers manually operated the Hunley and sunk the Union ship Housatonic in Charleston Harbor. Charleston offers tourists more than Civil War history. The South Carolina Aquarium has natural habitats of the Carolinas and around the world. Visit Cypress Gardens Park and walk along 3.5 miles of nature trails, visit the Butterfly House or the “Swamparium,” with a variety of swamp creatures. Charleston has been dubbed by some “the cradle of southern history and charm.” Carriage tours are an elegant way to see this southern gem.
