If you book a hotel in the lakeside resort of Wannsee you will find yourself in the south west of Berlin in the suburb of Steglitz-Zehlendorf. Many hotels in all price categories are to be found along the shores of the Large Wannsee lake. The swimming area on the lake was opened in 1907 and today is notable as the largest public swimming area on any inland waters in the whole of Europe. The sandy beach is over one kilometer long and the sand was brought in from Travemünde on the Baltic. In really good weather as many as 30,000 bathers come here and the beach baskets and sun beds for hire complete the holiday atmosphere.

Whilst staying in the area many guests like to cycle along the special paths through the Grunewald forest to visit the Hunting Lodge to see the interesting collection of paintings or to climb the Grunewald Tower for a panoramic view over the lake, forest and the nearer suburbs of Berlin. The Botanical Graden in Steglitz attracts not only plant lovers but also many other visitors as it has a Botanical Museum and the Garden of the Counts laid out in the 17th Century.

The railway journey to Lichterfelde is worthwhile as there are many classical villas with the oldest and most interesting found along the Drakestraße. The Autobahn A 115 leads to the area or you may prefer the more relaxing drive along the pretty Havelchaussee.
